Fish mappas is a special kerala style fish curry. In this dish fish is cooked in coconut milk with tomato as main ingredient
Ingredients
- Fish (preferably King fish/Neymeen) - 4 slices
- Tomato- 1 big
- Shallots/small onion- 10
- mustard seeds- 1/2 tea spoon
- Fenugreek seeds-1/2 teaspoon
- curry leaves - 1 hand full
- ginger- 1 small piece
- garlic - 5 cloves [make ginger garlic paste]
- Greated coconut / coconut powder gets in market
- Tamarind - 1 small lemon size
- Chilly powder- 2 teaspoon
- Turmeric powder- 1 teaspoon
- salt to taste
Method of preparation
Step 1:
Clean fish properly. Make it into thin slices. Add Salt, Chilly powder and Turmeric powder and marinate. Keep it aside for good absorption of masala into fish.
Step 2:
Take coconut milk from grated coconut. Take 1st milk and second milk in separate bowls.keep it.
Soak tamarind in 1/4 cup of water.
Step 3:
Take a pan. Heat oil in it. Add mustard seeds. When it pops up add fenugreek seeds and fry it. Add curry leaves fry. Add shallots/ small onion in it fry well. When it becomes brown in color add ginger garlic paste and saute it. Add tomato saute it. Add tamarind water. When it boils add well marinated fish into it and mix well. Add the second milk of coconut. Close the pan with a lid and let the fish cooked in second milk of coconut. This may take 10 minutes.
Once you find the fish got cooked well Add the first milk of coconut. Boil well . You can turn off the stove when the dish is semi gravy.
Note : I use coconut powder available in market to prepare coconut milk. It gives a very nice taste . I like it than cocnut milk. Anyway it depends on your tastebuds ;)
